Hamline University School of Law Seeks Director for Dispute Resolution Institute

Hamline University School of LawSeeks Director for Dispute Resolution Institute

Hamline University School of Law seeks a Director for its internationally acclaimed Dispute Resolution Institute (DRI), ranked in the top five among U.S. dispute resolution programs by U.S. News & World Report for eight consecutive years.  The Director will lead the law school's substantial alternative dispute resolution (ADR) initiatives with the assistance of a four-person administrative staff and support from twelve faculty colleagues who regularly teach ADR subjects.

The Director’s responsibilities will include strategic planning, curriculum development, maintenance and growth of relationships with relevant national and international scholarly and professional associations, scholarship production, teaching, and contributing (together with all faculty) to the law school’s efforts to attract law students and place them in rewarding employment upon graduation.  The Director also will work with colleagues in other divisions of the university to develop fully integrated, campus-wide, comprehensive initiatives in conflict resolution.

Candidates are expected to hold a J.D. or, for exceptional candidates, a Ph.D in conflict resolution; have demonstrated experience in ADR; and take the lead in integrating the law school’s ADR efforts with the law school's other centers of excellence (see below), as well as with the university's graduate schools, including the newly created School of Business.  Significant scholarship in the field is preferred.  This is a tenure-track position with faculty rank.

DRI's core activities include January and Summer Term domestic institutes; study abroad programs in London, Rome, and Budapest; a certificate program in advocacy and problem solving for J.D. students; a certificate program in dispute resolution for lawyers and other professionals; and a biennial symposium with papers published in the law school’s Journal of Public Law & Policy.  In addition, the Mediation Center for Dispute Resolution, an affiliated non-profit with its own director, serves as DRI's praxis arm by providing consulting, direct neutral services, and sliding fee scale family law mediation services.

The work of DRI is complemented by the law school's newly-formed Health Law Institute (HLI), which in its first two years has introduced a comprehensive curriculum for J.D. students and a series of specialty offerings in the Summer and January Terms for health professionals in the Upper Midwest, cosponsored a symposium on Conflict Resolution in Health Care, and launched two certificate programs, including a new program for health care compliance officers.  In addition, the law school is launching a new business law center.
