General Counsel and Chief Human Resources Officer (Exempt Position at St. Thomas)

The University of St. Thomas, chosen in 2010 by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal as a “Best Place to Work,” seeks a General Counsel and Chief Human Resources Officer.

Founded in 1885, the University of St. Thomas is a Catholic independent, liberal arts, archdiocesan university that emphasizes values-centered, career-oriented education. Located in the major metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, St. Thomas is Minnesota’s largest private university. Its 11,000 students pursue degrees in a wide range of liberal arts, professional, and graduate programs.

The General Counsel and Chief Human Resources Officer is a member of the senior management of the university and is a member of the President’s staff.  As General Counsel, she or he functions as the chief legal officer of the university providing legal advice to the Board of Trustees, the President, senior administrators and other members of the university community on all aspects of university operations. 

Primary responsibilities include representing the university, President and Board of Trustees in litigation and on all legal matters; managing university response to litigation, legal investigation and other duties under the law; providing legal advice to faculty, staff and administrators relating to university policies and procedures; providing legal counsel and policy advice to the Board of Trustees and its committees on governance and related matters; maintaining expertise and providing legal guidance, updates, reviews and recommendations to the President and senior administrators on existing and evolving laws (including statutes and regulations) and legal trends involving all aspects of university academic and non-academic operations; supervising and coordinating the engagement and work product of outside counsel; assisting with risk assessments; and supporting university offices charged with investigation and resolution of disputes or policy violations.

As the Chief Human Resources Officer, she or he provides supervision over the human resources activities of the university and its Human Resources Department to ensure an environment which supports the university’s commitment to its mission through the hiring, support and professional development of all members of the community.

Additional responsibilities include providing leadership to the Human Resources Office, including direction and support for its personnel, operations and budget; hiring and working with a manager of the Human Resources Office and staff to ensure an effective, efficient, personal, and caring department in all areas of a typical human resources unit, including recruitment, compensation, professional and personal development, technology, training, workforce diversity, and strategic planning; providing legal counsel to Human Resources Office personnel on matters related to employment law; and lending advice to the President and senior administrators on organizational and personnel issues.

This position requires a Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited institution and licensed to practice law in Minnesota, or eligible to obtain such admission promptly after hiring. Significant legal experience – including litigation experience – as a practicing attorney with demonstrated experience in one or more of the following specialties:  employment law, higher education law, immigration, real estate, regulatory and tax matters, employee benefits, or non-profit governance.
