Executive Director – Call for Justice, LLC

Summary:
The Executive Director will be the chief executive of Call for Justice, LLC, a new non-profit organization that will work with United Way 2-1-1 to provide timely and effective legal referrals and utilize volunteers to staff a legal advice hotline.

Responsibilities:
1. The Executive Director will lead the day-to-day operations of Call for Justice under the policies determined by the Call for Justice Board of Directors.

2. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring that Call for Justice officers and board members are kept fully informed of the conditions and operations of Call for Justice to enable board members to carry out their fiduciary responsibilities.

3. The Executive Director will be responsible for the sound financial management of Call for Justice, including development of an annual budget, with the assistance and guidance of the Call for Justice Treasurer and Board of Directors.

4. The Executive Director will be responsible for effective programmatic management of Call for Justice, developing an annual plan with the assistance and guidance of the Call for Justice Board of Directors. The annual plan will detail objectives and strategies for implementing the goals and policies of the board, and will form the basis for board reviews.

5. The Executive Director will develop and maintain positive relationships with other law-related entities including local bar associations, United Way 2-1-1, law firms, legal service providers, the courts, government agencies and public service organizations to promote the best interests of Call for Justice.

6. The Executive Director will use best practices to hire and supervise staff within the adopted budget and policies of Call for Justice.

7. The Executive Director will also be responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers to staff a legal advice hotline.

8. The Executive Director will be responsible for generating revenue for Call for Justice, including soliciting contributions from individuals, law firms, and community foundations, as well as potential federal funding, completing all required program evaluations.

9. The Executive Director will assist with training of 2-1-1 call center staff, providing information that will promote effective legal referrals by the call center staff. The Executive Director will also obtain ongoing, current information from local legal service providers and provide the information to 2-1-1, to allow call center staff to provide appropriate legal referrals.

10. The Executive Director will foster effective media relations to support Call for Justice’s objectives.

Qualifications:
1. A license to practice law in the state of Minnesota; familiarity with Minnesota law and practice preferred.

2. A minimum of 5 years experience providing civil legal services; familiarity with the local and national legal services community preferred.

3. Demonstrated ability to recruit, train and supervise volunteers.

4. Demonstrated fundraising ability.

5. Strong financial management and budgeting skills; experience managing a nonprofit organization preferred.

6. Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving and communications skills, with the ability to develop solid working relationships with volunteer attorneys, legal service providers, current and potential funders, the media and consumers of legal services.

7. Strong technical and computer skills, including knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs. Awareness of emerging technology and its impact on the provision of legal services, including social networking.

8. Strong organizational and prioritization skills. Ability to set and meet deadlines.

Reporting Relationship:
The Executive Director reports and is responsible to the Call for Justice Board of Directors and is supervised by its president. The Executive Director is reviewed annually by members of the Call for Justice Board of Directors.

Salary and Benefits:
This is a full time position. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position is eligible to receive paid benefits including medical, dental, life insurance, and long-term disability.

Staff Attorney – William Mitchell College of Law

William Mitchell College of Law, founded in 1900, is an independent private law school located in St. Paul, Minnesota.  William Mitchell is known for its pioneering blend of practical education and critical scholarship. The College has produced many distinguished leaders at the bench and bar and in the business and civic arenas, among them the 15th Chief Justice of the United States, Warren E. Burger ’31.

The College has a Staff Attorney opportunity with the Public Health Law Network, a national initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Dedicated to creating a lasting impact on public health through strategic application of the law, the Network provides legal technical assistance, delivers educational resources and creates a platform for professionals to share their knowledge and experiences.

The Staff Attorney, located in St. Paul, will assist the Network in efforts to strengthen the ability of public health practitioners, counsel, and other stakeholders to use law efficiently and effectively to protect and promote the public’s health.  This position provides technical assistance on specific issues of public health law, conducts training, develops tools and educational materials, and facilitates opportunities for networking and peer assistance.

Qualifications:  Member in good standing of the Bar of a U.S. jurisdiction; 1-3 yrs experience in providing legal counsel or technical legal support in public health law (related areas of law may be considered and a Masters of Public Health or Law with a health concentration may be considered in lieu of legal practice);  excellent legal research, writing and public speaking skills; strong organizational skills; and the ability to create and maintain partnerships and collaborative relationships.
