Legal Aid Supervising or Staff Attorney (St. Cloud)
Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking a supervising or staff attorney for its St. Cloud office. Law school 2017 graduates who have taken or are taking the July Minnesota Bar Examination will be considered. Supervising attorney applicants must have at least four years’ experience practicing law or three years practicing law with supervisory experience.
BACKGROUND: MMLA’s St. Cloud office provides civil representation to low-income people in nine central Minnesota counties. Senior Law and Health Care Outreach are provided in additional counties. The office receives funding from a variety of public and private sources and enjoys strong support from the organized bar. MMLA does not receive funding from the Legal Services Corporation. St. Cloud is a city of 68,000 and is located 65 miles northwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul. There are three area colleges, community theaters, a thriving arts community, and easy access to state parks and the Lake Wobegon Bike Trail.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Attorney will provide representation on poverty law issues, including family law and housing. Representation of low‑income individuals can include service work, complex litigation, policy advocacy, outreach, and community education as appropriate to client and office needs. A Supervising Attorney would be responsible for day-to-day supervision of housing and family law units, as well as providing direct representation to clients. The Supervising Attorney would also conduct regular docket reviews and staff evaluations, and would lead efforts to involve Legal Aid in community efforts to address housing issues affecting low-income people.
QUALIFICATIONS: Concern for the needs and rights of low-income people is required. These positions require the ability to work positively within a law office, supporting co‑workers while focusing on high-quality service to clients. Second language ability is helpful. Applicants must be licensed or be registered to take the July 2017 bar examination. Attorneys admitted in states other than Minnesota can get temporary pre-exam admission. Excellent communication, analytic, and written skills are required. Diverse economic, social, or cultural experiences are a plus. Proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office required. Experience in the areas of housing and/or family law is a plus. Experience supervising, teaching, and/or mentoring others is also a plus.
SALARY: Attorney: $47,000-$53,000 upon bar admission; Supervising Attorney: $52,250-$58,600 DOE. Salaries based on MMLA salary schedule. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, family medical, life, and long-term disability insurance.
